Fans ofOutlander have been wondering whether or not Captain Black Jack Randall was based on a real person or not.

Hanan Tobias Simpson Menzies (born 7 March 1974) is an English stage, television and film actor. He is best known for playing Frank and Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall in STARZ 's Outlander, for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination, in addition to his roles as Brutus in HBO's Rome and Edmure Tully in HBO's Game of Thrones. In Outlander Season 2, we found out that Black Jack Randall wasn’t a direct ancestor of Frank Randall, despite Frank’s beliefs. Mary Hawkins’ baby was that of Alex Randall, with her and Jack only marrying to ensure Mary was provided for after Alex’s death. But that didn’t make Mary and Black Jack Randall’s wedding valid. (Redirected from Black Jack Randall) The following is a list of characters from Diana Gabaldon 's Outlander series, beginning with the 1991 novel Outlander. The story focuses on 20th century nurse Claire Randall, who time travels to 18th-century Scotland and finds. 1 day ago  The hit STARZ romantic fantasy Outlander boasted one of the most brutal and violent antagonists on popular television in the form of the sadistic Jonathan Wolverton Randall, more infamously known as 'Black Jack Randall', a moniker coined for him to suit his twisted, dark nature. Picking himself up off the floor of the bath room, Randall’s soul broke. Its miserable shards howled in his chest.

Season three of Outlander saw the death of Captain Black Jack Randall, which led to questions about whether or not the tyrannical redcoat was actually based on a real figure.

Captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall (played by Tobias Menzies) passed many seasons ago. The evil villain died at the Battle of Culloden at the hands of Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Over the course of his time on the show, 'Black Jack' proved to be the most bloodthirsty and violent character on the show.

His cruelty was unparalleled, as he used violence to ensure that he got everything he wanted on the show. His torturous ways meant that he was feared and loathed across the world of Outlander.

This has led fans to wonder if there is any truth behind the theory that 'Black Jack' was actually based on a real person.

But how much is the character rooted in reality and how much was borne from US author Diana Gabaldon’s imagination?

Well, according to some sources, the character was not based on any real person from the Jacobite era, unlike other characters on the show. Outlander featured some real figures including the Duke of Sandringham (Simon Callow) and Bonnie Prince Charlie (Andrew Gower).

A newspaper called The Scotsman, however, has suggested the character could have been based on captain Caroline Frederick Scott, who is described by the publication as having a “brutal streak”.

In the book Culloden: Scotland’s Last Battle by historian Trevor Royale, Scott was said to have been led by a “visceral dislike of Highlanders” and had a personal desire to kill Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Sound familiar? Based on this description, there's certainly a chance that the idea for 'Black Jack' stems from Captain Scott.

Outlander season three saw Black Jack Randall (played by Tobias Menzies) killed once and for all on the battlefield of Culloden. However, a new interview from Diana Gabaldon during the Outlander End of Summer series has left some wondering if he could come back.

Is Black Jack Randall really dead in Outlander?

Captain Randall was Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) big enemy in the first few seasons.

The evil Redcoat had a vendetta against Jamie and went to some horrifying lengths to inflict pain on him.

Therefore, some fans were pleased when he was finally killed off during the Battle of Culloden back in season three.

Viewers will remember how after wounding Jamie, he died on top of him and succumbing to his own injuries.

However, ever since this moment, viewers have been skeptical if he had actually died or not.

This is especially the case as he had avoided death once before at the end of season one.

Posting on Quora in January, one fan called AceMoe wrote: “Well, BJR/Frank is very cunning.

“Did he die at the battle? Most likely not. He was impaled but it may not have went onto anything major.”

While there has been no indication the dastardly character is still alive in the show, there is some hope for those wanting to see him back.

During a new series of interviews on Facebook called the End of Summer series, author Gabaldon gave an interesting tease.

When she was asked by show producer Maril Davis if she has ever gone back on storylines, Gabaldon revealed she had.

She explained: “As my husband has said, ‘You can’t tell if anybody in your books is really dead unless you saw them go [dying noise] right in front of you.’”

The author didn’t give any indication about whom she was talking about, but it seems possible some characters thought to be dead could make a reappearance.

Viewers will just have to wait and see if Randall might be one of them when the series continues.

So far in Gabaldon’s novels, Randall is definitely dead in Jamie and Claire’s timeline.

However, he did make an appearance in book eight Written in My Heart’s Own Blood.

Readers will remember how Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) heads back in time to 1739 to visit Randall at Fort William.

He does this in order to try and find out more about some dog tags he uncovered during his search for his missing son.

After Randall tells him all he knows about them, he then asks him to pray with him, which Roger does.

So while Randall is dead in the book series as far as fans can tell, he does appear once again.

And now heading into book nine, it is also possible fans will see more of him when the series returns as well.
